Turtle tours to Playa Ostional
Ostional is about a 25-minute drive from Nosara and it is the second largest nesting place in the world for olive ridley sea turtles.
About 12 times a year you may see turtles waiting their turn to swarm ashore, dig a hole in the sand and lay their eggs (these are all females, the males never go ashore). After laying their eggs, they go back to the ocean. The whole process for each turtle - from the water and back - takes approximately one hour.
This arrivals (arribadas) or synchronized turtles mass nesting are unique for Ostional. Sometimes -between July and December - the arribada involves thousands of olive ridleys over a three to five day period.

Approx. 45 days after an arribada, the turtle babies hatch, come out of the sand and run towards the ocean. Turtle watching in Ostional is an unforgetable experience!

NEW: They started building a bridge over the big river between Nosara and Ostional. Therefore soon there is also access to Ostional in rainy season!

Lagarta Lodge organizes turtle tours with the guides from the “Asociación de Guias Locales de Ostional (AGLO)”. They are authorized guides from the Minaet Ostional and provide information in Spanish or in English.
